°° Transmediale: The annual festival and numerous cooperation projects articulate the relationship between technology and culture in non-linear, dynamic ways including exhibitions, conferences, film and video programmes, live performances and publications. 2012 the festival is investigating the productive and destructive sides of incompatibility as a fundamental condition for cultural production in times of crisis. January 31 until February 5 at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. °°
°° CTM: Besides the main festival there is the Club Transmediale, a festival for experimental music. Also January 31 until February 5 in different locations. °°
°° Berlinale: The Berlin Film Festival! The programme of the International Film Festival shows about 400 films, mostly international or European premieres of every genre, length and format in the various sections: great international cinema in the Competition, independent and art house in Panorama, films for young audiences in Generation, new discoveries and promising talents from the German film scene in Perspektive Deutsches Kino, avant garde, experimental and unfamiliar cinematography in the Forum, and an exploration of cinematic possibilities in Berlinale Shorts. The programme is rounded out by a Retrospective as well as an Homage, which focuses on the œuvre of a great personality of cinema. °°
°° Romeo and Juliet: Ballet in three acts. Almost no other material has been adapted so many times to the dance stage as that of William Shakespeare's ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The adaptation by John Cranko has gone down in ballet history with good reason: With his dancers, he constantly sought to portray real emotions and did everything he could to directly include these in his choreographies. Premiere February 9, performance until June, see website for details, at Deutsche Oper Berlin. °°
°° Gundula Schulze Eldowy. The Early Years: Berlin Photographs from 1977 to 1990. “The severe images, critical of civilisation, which Gundula Schulze Eldowy took between 1977 and 1990 predominantly in East Berlin and later also in Dresden und Leipzig, push the limits of what can be endured. They show affection yet no shame whatsoever.” 10 December 2011 to 26 February 2012, C/O Berlin. °°
°° “Filmstadt Berlin”: Berlin film festival about the historical extremely interesting years from 1946 to 1990. The program shows fiction and documentaries about Berlin’s past reflecting also the world’s history. You will discover unknown, banned and lost film material. Runs thru February 24 at different cinemas throughout Berlin. °°
